I’m a holistic life coach with an ecological approach in assisting people who want to work on the situation that is holding them back from the life they want. I started developing my approach to life coaching while engaged in Ph.D. research in Applied Philosophy at the University of Melbourne. This research centred on authenticity and how challenges can disrupt living authentically, especially challenges from emerging technology. It included work on the then emerging practice of Philosophical Therapy as a way to deal with challenges to authentic living.
Since then I have completed a Diploma of Counselling and a Graduate Certificate in Career Development. I am a Professional level member of the Career Development Association of Australia.
My holistic coaching practice draws on the ecological approach developed by the anthropologist and psychotherapist Gregory Bateson, and dynamic complex systems theory (formerly known as Chaos theory). My knowledge and skills in working with these ways of understanding have been tempered with, and complemented by a deep engagement with key works of literature – especially 20th
century modernists — history, and philosophy. Both from extensive reading and a multidisciplinary B.A. degree and honours in Philosophy from Murdoch University in WA, and 5 years of PhD research in applied Philosophy and Creative writing at the University of Melbourne.
Initially interested in personal development through corporate works like In Search of Excellence, by the late 1980’s my focus had shifted to the holistic modalities that evolved out of the Human Potential Movement. Many of those modalities had a component of alpha-rich mental states. These include Float therapy, Superlearning, Silva Mind Method, meditation and Tai Chi Of the various modalities I’ve engaged with over the years, the two techniques I combine deep, acquired knowledge with consistence practice are Tai Chi and Flotation Therapy.
After using float tanks and pods to de-stress and treat my musculoskeletal issues for more than 20 years it was only in 2010 that I learnt about flotation therapy as a specific way to use float tanks. Since then I’ve gained a solid understanding of how this particular way of using float tanks works by researching over a 100 scientific articles, book chapters and thesis’s on flotation, and trialling the
techniques and programs during 110 floats.
A a holistic life coach, the experience of floating across 30 years in a range of centres also helps me understand the differences likely to be encountered if you are attempting to replicate the results achieved in the float tanks of university psychology laboratory’s at your local commercial float centre.
The most important and holistic studies in float therapy have been conducted in Sweden since 1999. Publications from that research show the combination of counselling and float therapy is highly effective with stress related disorders like burnout and fibromyalgia. Using the information from these studies I was able to eliminate the fibromyalgia pain and suffering I’d experienced since 1994
I also started Tai Chi in 1988. Initially the physical practice did not last long, only resuming as a consistent practice from 1998. However, I did maintain a deep engagement with the Tao Te Ching for ten years, and later the Taoist philosophy that is the foundation of Tai Chi. Since then my knowledge in the Tai Chi form has grown from the studying the works of Cheng Man-ching, and more recently Sun Lutang.
Engagement with the Ancient Chinese Philosophers opened my mind to the potential value of the Ancient Philosophers of the Western Tradition. Of these Seneca has been a source of valuable thinking about how to live a good life for me since 2004.
